Shuya

City in the Ivanovo oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation, 30 km/19 mi southeast of Ivanovo; population (1990 est) 70,000. The city is a centre of the textile industry. Founded in the late 14th century, it conducted a lively trade with towns on the Volga and, through the regional trading centre at Yaroslavl, with England. The first textile products from Shuya date from 1755.
