Shwebo

Shwebo

Town in Sagaing division, north central Myanmar, 67 km/42 mi northwest of Mandalay, and bounded on the east by the Irrawaddy River; population (1998 est) 169,000. It is in an agricultural area on the northern edge of Myanmar's dry zone, producing millet, sesame, groundnuts, cotton, and, with extensive irrigation schemes, rice. Agricultural produce is transported to Mandalay by train.

Originally known as Moksobo, Schwebo was the capital of a Shan kingdom 1760–64.
