Sibley, Antoinette

    0.03 sec.

Sibley, Antoinette (1939– )

English dancer. She joined the Royal Ballet in 1956 and became principal soloist in 1960. Her roles included Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Giselle, and the title role in Kenneth MacMillan's Manon (1974). A dancer of exceptional musicality and grace, she excelled in Frederick Ashton's The Dream (1964). She formed an ideal partnership with Anthony Dowell.

A knee injury in 1976 brought her career to a five-year standstill, but in 1981 she returned to dance in Robert Helpmann's Hamlet and was a regular guest artist with the Royal Ballet for several years. She continued her involvement with dance as president of the Royal Academy of Dancing, and as a ballet coach and mentor. She was made a CBE in 1973.
