Ifni

Former Spanish overseas province (1860–1969) in southwest Morocco, on the Atlantic coast opposite the Canary Islands; area 1,920 sq km/740 sq mi. The chief town is Sidi Ifni. The region is largely desert, but in the coastal area there is fishing, barley is grown, and sheep, camels, and goats are reared. There are also handicraft industries.

Ifni was first settled as a trading post in 1476 by Diego García de Herrera, lord of the Canary Islands. Ifni was part of a larger area ceded to Spain by Morocco in 1860; it was ceded to Morocco in 1969.
