Siddons, Sarah (1755–1831)English actor. Her majestic presence made her suited to tragic and heroic roles such as Lady Macbeth, Zara in Congreve's The Mourning Bride, and Constance in King John. She toured the provinces with her father Roger Kemble (1721–1802), until she appeared in London to immediate acclaim in Otway's Venice Preserv'd (1774). This led to her appearing with David Garrick at Drury Lane. She retired in 1812. How to thank TFD for its existence?
