Sidonius Apollinaris, Gaius Sollius (c. 431-c. 488)

Gallo-Roman poet and bishop. He was made a senator in Rome by Avitus, Emperor of the West, whose daughter he had married, and was later raised to patrician rank. In 469 he returned to Gaul and was appointed bishop of Clermont-Ferrand. His extant writings include 24 poems and nine books of valuable letters. He was canonized after his death.
