Siegen

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the River Sieg, 93 km/58 mi southeast of Düsseldorf; population (2005 est) 106,300. It was the centre of an iron-mining district, and still makes special steels, and also has office equipment and computer manufacturers. It was once the seat of the Counts of Nassau-Siegen. The artist Peter Paul Rubens was born here.

The castle is a large baroque palace now occupied by govenment offices. There is the 13th-century hexagonal church of St Nicholas, and the 10th century church of St Martin (rebuilt in the 16th century).
