Siegl, Otto (1896–1978)

Austrian composer, conductor, and violinist. After working as an orchestra violinist in Austria, he went to Germany, where he began teaching, and became professor of composition at Cologne Conservatory.

He studied violin with the Austrian composer Egon Kornauth (1891–1959) and composition with Roderich Mojsisovics-Mojsvár (1877–1953) in Vienna. He joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as a violinist, worked at the Graz Opera, and then went to Germany. There he became music director at Paderborn, at the same time conducting and teaching at Bielefeld and Essen. In 1933 he became composition professor at the Cologne Conservatory, returning to Vienna in 1948.

oratorios Das Grosse Halleluja (Claudius), Eines Menschen Lied (1931), Klingendes Jahr (1933), Trostkantate, Mutter Deutschland; Missa Mysterium Magnum; Verliebte alle Reime for chorus.

Orchestral

three symphonies, sinfonietta, Lyrische Tanzmusik, Festliche Ouvertüre, Pastoralouvertüre (1939), Concerto grosso antico (1936), Galante Abendmusik, Festmusik und Trauermusik for orchestra; piano concerto (1963), violin concerto.

Chamber

concerto for string quartet and string orchestra; five string quartets; songs.
