Siepi, Cesare (1923– )

Italian bass. He studied at the Milan Conservatory, making his debut in 1941. From 1946 he sang at La Scala, Milan. In New York he was a leading member of the Metropolitan Opera House company from 1950; his roles there included Philip II, Boris, Gurnemanz, and Figaro. In 1953 he sang Don Giovanni at Salzburg under Furtwängler (which was filmed), and in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1962). He sang Roger in Verdi's Jerusalem at Parma, in 1985.
