Sieyès, Emmanuel-Joseph (1748–1836)

French cleric and constitutional theorist who led the bourgeois attack on royal and aristocratic privilege in the States General (parliament) 1788–89. Active in the early years of the French Revolution, he later retired from politics, but re-emerged as an organizer of the coup that brought Napoleon I to power in 1799.
