Sighişoara

Town in Mureş county, central Romania, on the River Tirnava Mare, 72 km/45 mi northeast of Sibiu; population (1993) 40,000. The town was founded in the 13th century by German colonists. It has an old citadel, walls, and towers, and several medieval churches.

Sighişoara lies in Transylvania and is the birthplace of Vlad Tepes of the Dracula legend. It was the site of a Russian victory over the Hungarians 1849, suppressing one of the revolutions of 1848.
