signal-to-noise ratio

Ratio of the power of an electrical signal to that of the unwanted noise accompanying the signal. It is expressed in decibels.

In general, the higher the signal-to-noise ratio, the better. For a telephone, an acceptable ratio is 40 decibels; for television, the acceptable ratio is 50 decibels.
