Sigurd

Hero of Norse legend; see Siegfried.

Sigurd

Opera by Ernest Reyer (libretto by C du Locle and A Blau, based on the Nibelung Saga), produced at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, on 7 January 1884. Its plot is similar to that of Götterdämmerung. Sigurd rescues Brunehild under the influence of Hilda's love potion and gives her to King Gunther. However, evil Hagen convinces Gunther that Sigurd and Brunehild are lovers, and Gunther then kills Sigurd. Brunehild throws herself on his funeral pyre.
