Silcher, Friedrich

Silcher, Friedrich (1789–1860)

German composer and conductor. He became a schoolmaster, but in 1815 went to Stuttgart as a conductor and in 1817 to the University of Tübingen in the same capacity. Some of his songs have become folk songs in Germany.

two hymn-books (three and four voices), collections of songs, some arranged, some composed by himself, including ‘Aennchen von Tharau’, ‘Loreley’ (Heine), ‘Morgen muss ich fort’, ‘Zu Strassburg auf der Schanz’.
