Silliman, Benjamin, Sr (1779–1864)

US chemist and geologist. Silliman became professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale in 1902. In181 he founded the American Journal of Science, which he edited until 1946. Sillliman popularized then new science of geology to a generation of students, and made major contributions to mineralogy and the geology of New England.
