City in northwestern Arkansas, just east of the Oklahoma border, and 35 km/22 mi northwest of Fayetteville, on the Ozark Plateau; population (1990) 8,200. It is a shipping centre for livestock, fruit, and poultry producers.

The city was founded in 1880 as a health resort because of its mineral springs, and has long been noted as a Chautauqua centre (centre for the Chautauqua system of popular education in the arts, sciences, and humanities) and religious retreat. John Brown University (1919) is here.
