Silverstein, Joseph (1932- )

US violinist and conductor. He studied with Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute. He played in various orchestras before joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in 1955; he was made its leader in 1962, and was assistant conductor 1971-83. He was a guest conductor with most major American orchestras. From 1983 he was music director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. He taught at Yale and Boston universities and was a leading interpreter of modern music.
