Silverton

Town and administrative headquarters of San Juan County, southwestern Colorado, on the Animas River, in the San Juan Mountains, 61 km/38 mi northeast of Durango; population (1990) 700. It is a tourist and trade centre near various metal deposits.

Formerly the centre of the San Juan mining district and a silver boom town from 1871, the town grew with the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1883.
