Silves

Town in Faro district, southern Portugal, 50 km/31 mi northwest of Faro; population (1991) 6,000. The region produces figs, olives, vines, and almonds. There is a Gothic cathedral and a ruined Moorish castle. Silves was the capital of the Algarve under the Moors, from whom it was taken by the Portuguese in 1242.

PIPING UP: A folk band plays on the church steps in Silves Event number one was held in Silves, which is a large town, for our neck of the woods anyway, to the South which boasts a most imposing Moorish fort on the hilltop and a large church overlooking the town below.
