Silvestri, Constantin (1913–1969)

Romanian conductor, composer, and pianist. He studied at the Bucharest Conservatory, making his debut as a pianist in 1924 and as a conductor in 1930. He became conductor at the Bucharest Opera in 1935 and of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra in 1945. He made his British debut in 1957 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; from 1961 he conducted the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In 1963 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, with Khovanshchina.

Works

Music for Strings, Three Pieces for String Orchestra; two string quartets; two sonatas for violin and piano; sonatas for harp, flute, clarinet, bassoon.
