Simferopol

Principal city of Crimea, in southern Ukraine and capital of the Crimean oblast (region); population (1990) 348,900. Simferopol is an important centre for commerce and transportation. Its industries include the manufacture of soap and tobacco, and agricultural products grown in the area are brought to market here. The city stands on the site of the Tatar town of Ak-Mechet, conquered by the Russians in 1783.

The ancient Scythian settlement of Neapolis, of which some remains exist, is located here.
