Simon, Carly Elizabeth (1945– )

US singer and songwriter. Her early hit singles included ‘That's the Way I Always Heard it Should Be’ (1970) and ‘You're So Vain’ (1972). She wrote and performed ‘Nobody Does it Better’ (1977), the theme for the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. Her successes in the 1980s included ‘Why?’ (1982), ‘Coming Around Again’ (1986), and ‘Let the River Run’ (1988), the theme for the film Working Girl, which won an Academy Award for best original song in 1989.

Her radio-friendly songs include often confessional lyrics dealing with love, sex, and family. Her albums include Carly Simon (1971), No Secrets (1972), Anticipation (1972), and Letters Never Sent (1994).

Born in New York, she began her career in 1964, recording with her sister Lucy as the Simon Sisters. She received a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1971.
