Simon Boccanegra

Opera by Verdi (libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on a Spanish drama by Gutiérrez), produced at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, on 12 March 1857. A revised version, with the libretto altered by Boito, was produced at La Scala, Milan, on 24 March 1881. The story concerns the Doge of Venice Boccanegra, who discovers his long-lost illegitimate daughter, Amelia. She loves his enemy, Gabriele Adorno, and he and Boccanegra are reconciled. In the end, Boccanegra dies, poisoned by his jealous courtier, Paolo.
