Simon Stock, St (c. 1165–1265)

English Carmelite friar, sixth general of the order from 1247. He established houses in the chief university cities of Europe (Cambridge, 1248; Oxford, 1253; Paris, 1260; Bologna, 1260) and modified the rule, making the Carmelites an order of mendicant friars instead of hermits. His feast day is 6 May.
