Simpson, Joanne Malkus (1923– )

US meteorologist. The first woman to receive a PhD in meteorology in 1949, her award-winning research on cumulus clouds and weather modification took her around the country. Her home-base was the Goddard Space Flight Center/NASA since 1979; she was chief scientist for meteorology from 1988.

She was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She studied with Carl-Gustaf Rossby at the University of Chicago and trained military forecasters during World War II.
