Simpson, Robert (Wilfred Levick)

Simpson, Robert (Wilfred Levick) (1921- )

English composer and music critic. He studied privately with Howells and was active in the BBC. He wrote on music, especially that of Bruckner, Nielsen, and Sibelius. His music displays tonal stability and an emphasis on organic unity, influenced by Beethoven and Bruckner. His output includes 11 symphonies and 15 string quartets.

He took a degree in music at Durham University, England, in 1952.

11 symphonies (1951-90), Nielsen Variations (1986), concertos for violin (1959), piano (1967), flute (1989), and cello; Variations and Fugue on a theme of Bach for strings (1991); fantasia for strings; 15 string quartets (1952-91); piano music.
