Sinaloa

The Pacific port of Mazatlán, Sinaloa state, north-central Mexico. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific,’ Mexico's largest Pacific port is also a popular resort. The city lies on a peninsula overlooking Atlas Bay on the Gulf of California. In addition to tourism, the area supports abundant fishing, and serves as the major link between Baja California and mainland Mexico.

State of northwestern Mexico, on the Gulf of California; area 58,092 sq km/22,429 sq mi; population (2000 est) 2,534,800. Its capital is Culiacán. The main economic activity is agriculture, especially in the river valleys. A predominantly arid area, wheat, cotton, sugar cane, and tobacco crops are farmed with the help of extensive irrigation. Other industries include brewing, cotton textiles, and mining for silver, gold, and graphite.
