Sinfonia da Requiem

Work for orchestra in three movements by Britten; commissioned to celebrate the 2,600th anniversary of the Imperial Japanese dynasty. The work was rejected for its allusions to the Catholic liturgy. The first performance was conducted by Barbirolli in New York on 29 March 1941 - eight months before Pearl Harbor.
