Sinjar

Town and hill district in northern Iraq, 160 km/99 mi west of Mosul. Sinjar is situated on the slopes of the Jebel Sinjar mountain, on the Syrian border. It is mainly inhabited by Yezidi.

The present town of Sinjar is much smaller than the ancient city (known as Singara) on which it is built. During the wars between Persia and the Byzantine Empire it was the scene of much conflict, as it was during the Ottoman era.
