18 September 1931Japan, ChinaJapanese troops occupy Mukden (now Shenyang), northeast China, and, joined by reinforcements, begin to expand throughout north Manchuria.
2 October 1938JapanJapan withdraws from the League of Nations in protest at its identification by the League as the aggressor in the Sino-Japanese war.
14 September 1939China, JapanJapanese troops advance south towards the Chinese port of Changsha, but are repulsed. This ends Japanese expansion in central China until 1944.
