Sion

Capital of the Swiss canton of Valais, lying in the valley of the River Rhône southeast of Lake Geneva; population (2000) 27,200. It has three ruined castles, a 15th-century cathedral, and a 13th-century church. Sion is a market centre for the canton's vegetables, fruit, and wine.
