Sitka

City and naval base on the west coast of Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago, facing Sitka Sound, in southeast Alaska, USA; population (1990) 8,600. It was the chief town of Russian America 1804–67. Sitka is a trading and commercial centre and has fishing and timber-processing industries, as well as being a popular tourist destination.

St Michael's Cathedral, built 1848, was the first Russian Orthodox cathedral in North America. It burned down 1966, although many icons were saved, and was rebuilt 1976. The Sitka national historical park commemorates the last battle (1804) between the Tlingit indigenous people and Russian troops. The Sitka spruce tree is native to the area.
