The European nuthatch is one of about 25 species of nuthatch. They are robust little birds, with strong legs and sharp claws to help them climb. They run up and down branches and tree trunks, looking for food.

Any of a group of small birds with short tails and pointed beaks. Nuthatches climb head first up, down, and around tree trunks and branches, foraging for insects and their larvae. (Family Sittidae, order Passeriformes.)

The white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) of North America has a black cap, grey wings, and white underparts. It is 14 cm/5.5 in long.
