Siwa

Oasis in Mersa governorate, northwestern Egypt, 550 km/342 mi west of Cairo and 30 km/19 mi from the Libyan border. Siwa lies 18 m/59 ft below sea level and contains several artesian wells. The oasis is 82 km/51 mi long. It is a lush and fertile region which produces olives and dates. Its inhabitants are Berber.

The temple and oracle of Zeus Ammon, in the Siwa oasis, was once visited by Alexander the Great.
