Skagit

River rising in British Columbia, Canada, and flowing through northwestern Washington, USA, into Skagit Bay, Puget Sound, on the Pacific Ocean; length 250 km/155 mi. It is noted for its scenic gorges.

The Skagit Power Project, begun in the 1920s, provides Seattle with electricity produced at Ross, Diablo, and Gorge dams. Ross Dam (1949) forms Ross Lake, which backs up to the British Columbia border within a national recreation area.

Course

After rising in the northern Cascade Range in the extreme south of British Columbia, the Skagit flows southwest into Washington. It drains much of Mount Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest and enters Skagit Bay through a delta south of Mount Vernon.
