Skagway

City and ice-free port in southeast Alaska, USA, 100 km/62 mi northwest of Juneau at the head of Chilkoot Inlet of Lynn Canal; population (1990) 4,400. It is a trade and shipping centre for an interior mining area and the coastal terminus of the White Pass and Yukon railway; it is also a seaport and has an airport. It was founded 1897.

Skagway sprang up overnight as a trading post serving Klondike gold-rush pioneers: it grew from one log cabin to a town of 20,000 in three months. It lies in the Klondike Gold Rush national historical park, and is popular with tourists in summer.
