Skeena

River in western central British Columbia, Canada; length 580 km/360 mi. It rises in the Skeena Mountains and flows into Channel Sound of the Pacific Ocean, just south of Prince Rupert.

Its main tributaries are the Babine and the Bulkley, both from the east. Terrace is the largest settlement along its course.

History

Hudson's Bay Company posts were established in the area as early as the 1820s, and the river's use in trade grew in the late 19th century, when salmon fishing also flourished. As a transportation corridor to the Pacific, the Skeena and its tributaries have been served by the Grand Trunk Pacific (Canadian National) Railway since 1914 and by the Yellowhead Highway since the 1950s.
