skiffle| British popular music style, introduced by singer and banjo player Lonnie Donegan (1931–2002) in the mid-1950s, using improvised percussion instruments such as tea chests and washboards. Donegan popularized US folk songs like ‘Rock Island Line’ (1953; a UK hit in 1955 and US hit in 1956) and ‘Cumberland Gap’ (1957). Skiffle gave way to beat music in the early 1960s. |
