Skowhegan

Town and administrative headquarters of Somerset County, south-central Maine, on an island and along both banks of the Kennebec River, 24 km/16 mi northwest of Waterville; population (1990) 8,700. It is known for its summer school of art and sculpture, summer theatre, and state fair.

On former American Indian ground, the town has a 20-m/65-ft sculpture of an Abnaki by Bernard Langley. In 1775 the US soldier Benedict Arnold camped at Skowhegan en route to Québec, Canada.

Senator Margaret Chase Smith was born and lived here.
