Skrowaczewski, Stanisław (1923– )

Polish-born US conductor. He studied in Poland, and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. After an early career as a pianist he held various conducting posts in Poland (1946–59). He made his US debut at Cleveland, in 1958; he was later music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1960–79). Between 1983 and 1991 he was the principal conductor of the Hallé Orchestra. He also composed, his works including four symphonies (1936–54) and four string quartets.
