Skuherský, František Zdeněk (1830–1892)

Bohemian composer and teacher. He gave up medical studies for music, which he studied under Kittl and Pitsch, the directors of the Prague Conservatory and Organ School respectively. In 1854–65 he was a conductor at Innsbruck, but returned to Prague as director of the Organ School in the latter year. He was also active as a pianist, and as a lecturer at the Czech University. He took part in the reform of church music after study in Rome and Regensburg. He wrote several theoretical treatises.

Works

operas Samo (composed 1854), Vladimir: God's Chosen (1863), Lora (1861), Rector and General (1873), and The Love Ring; symphonic poem May and three fugues for orchestra; string quartet (1871), piano quintet, piano trio.
