Slaney, Mary

Slaney, Mary (1958– )

US track athlete. The 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre gold medallist at the 1983 world championships, she set five outdoor and 16 indoor world records at distances between 800 and 10,000 metres. Additionally, she broke numerous US records including 22 in outdoor events. However, she never won an Olympic medal and was famously thwarted in 1984 when she was accidentally tripped by Zola Budd in the 3,000 metres at Los Angeles.

She was born in Bunnvale, New Jersey.
