Slave Lake

    0.06 sec.

Slave Lake

Town in north-central Alberta, Canada, near the southern shore of Lesser Slave Lake, 211 km/131 mi northwest of Edmonton; population (1991) 5,600. Its economy is based on local timber and oil resources and it has long been a transportation centre between the Arctic and Hudson Bay watersheds.

Riverboats had to pass here to reach the Peace River country early in the 20th century, leading to the original settlement of Sawridge (1906). A flood (1935-36) resulted in the town being moved 2 km/1 mi to its present site. The construction of the Alaska Highway stimulated further growth during World War II.
