North Tarrytown

Village within Mount Pleasant town, Westchester County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 8,200. North Tarrytown lies on the Hudson River, 42 km/26 mi north-northeast of New York City and immediately north of Tarrytown.

During the Revolutionary War, the English soldier and spy John André was captured in North Tarrytown in 1780. It is now a largely residential suburb; for a long period a General Motors car assembly plant along the Hudson, which closed in 1996, was a mainstay of the local economy.
