Smailholm Tower

Smailholm Tower

Fortified tower in Scottish Borders unitary authority, Scotland, 9 km/7 mi northwest of Kelso. Dating from the 16th century, it is a five-storey watchtower, with walls that are 2 m/7 ft thick. Nearby Sandyknowe Farm was a childhood residence of the Scottish novelist and poet Walter Scott.

The exhibition includes a painting which Turner presented to Scott - and which features both men - after they had visited Smailholm Tower and nearby Sandyknowe Farm, where Scott spent part of his childhood.
Mr Calvert comes to Bamburgh from Scotland, where he has managed historic sites including Iona Abbey, Dryburgh Abbey and Smailholm Tower.
Chris later managed the Borders heritage sites of Hermitage Castle in Newcastleton, Smailholm Tower and Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose abbeys.
