Smareglia, Antonio (1854–1929)

Italian composer. He produced the first of his ten operas at Milan in 1879, but never had any real success, in spite of the good quality of his work. He was able to continue composing due to the support of his patron, the industrialist Carlo Sai, and the conductor Arturo Toscanini.

He was sent to Vienna to study engineering, but on hearing works by the great masters there he left for Milan in 1872 and studied composition under Franco Faccio at the conservatory there. In 1900 he went blind.
