Smart, Henry

Smart, Henry (Thomas) (1813–1879)

English organist and composer, nephew of George Smart. He learnt music from his father, the violinist Henry Smart (1778–1823), and later under W H Kearns, but he was largely self-taught. After receiving an organist's appointment at Blackburn (1831–36) he returned to London. He was successively organist at several churches until he became blind in 1864.

Berta, or The Gnome of the Hartzberg (1855), Undine and The Surrender of Calais (last two unfinished).

Vocal

cantatas The Bride of Dunkerron, King René's Daughter (after Herz, 1871), The Fishermaidens (1871), and Jacob (1873); festival anthems Sing to the Lord and Lord, thou hast been our refuge part-songs.
