Smigly-Rydz, Edward

Smigly-Rydz, Edward (1886-1941)

Polish soldier and politician. He fought with Józef Pilsudski on the Austrian side in World War I. In 1919 he was Pilsudski's coadjutor in setting up the Polish state, and commanded an army during the Polish-Soviet War (1919-20). Smigly-Rydz again helped Pilsudski in the coup of 1926. On Pilsudski's death in 1935, he was made marshal and inspector-general of the forces. When Poland was defeated in 1939, he fled to Romania but returned secretly to Warsaw in 1941, where he died. Smigly-Rydz was born in Galicia.
