Smiley, Jane (1949– )

US novelist and short-story writer. Her novel A Thousand Acres, a retelling of the King Lear story based on an Iowa farm, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1992. Her other books include Barn Blind (1980), her academic satire Moo (1995), The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton (1998), Horse Heaven (2000), Good Faith (2003), and Ten Days in the Hills (2007).

She was born in Los Angeles, California, and was a professor at Iowa State University 1981–96.
