Smyrna

Ancient city near the modern Turkish port of Izmir. The earliest remains date from the 3rd millennium BC, and excavations have revealed that by the 8th century BC the city had a circuit of defensive walls. This is one of the earliest signs of the revival of Greek culture after the collapse of the Mycenaean civilization.

Smyrna

Town in central Delaware, along the Smyrna River, 18 km/11 mi northwest of Dover; population (1990) 5,200. It is a commercial and shipping centre for local poultry, fruit, and grain, and has food canning and packing plants.

It was originally a Quaker settlement known as Duck Creek Crossroads.

Smyrna

City in northwestern Georgia, 14 km/9 mi northwest of Atlanta; population (1990) 31,000. It is a growing residential suburb with some light industry.

Smyrna

Town in central Tennessee, on Stewart Creek, midway between Murfreesboro and Nashville; population (1990) 13,600. It has a Nissan car plant. Its airport hosts a major annual air show.

In the 19th century it was an agricultural trade centre with products including cedar chests.
